Arts Initiative: Spring 2026 Exhibitions

The Arts Initiative is pleased to announce the opening of three spring 2026 semester exhibitions.

The Year of Mindful Blessings��reflects Buddhist monastic and Taiwanese artist Venerable Shide’s lifelong integration of spiritual cultivation and artistic practice, guided by lived experience and deep insight into impermanence and compassion. Her transcendent calligraphy, paintings, and seal carvings embody a meditative union of Dharma and art, where brush, mind, and presence become one.
Wild Mendocino��presents the stunning works of local photographer Benjamin A Carrero, shaped by time spent in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve, where slowing down and practicing patience reveal shifting light, quiet wildlife, and a deeper way of seeing. The exhibition invites viewers into moments of presence and stillness, fostering appreciation for the forest and the life it holds.
The fifth annual��91�㽶��Ƶ Community Art Show��showcases over 170 works of art from across 91�㽶��Ƶ, as well as the Instilling Goodness and Developing Virtue Girls’ and Boys’ Schools and the local Ukiah community. We hope you enjoy the bold ingenuity of our peers and friends in the final exhibition of the 2025-26 academic year.

The exhibitions are open to the public Mondays – Fridays, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm, and by appointment on weekends.

91�㽶��Ƶ Extension: Shurangama Sutra

The Shurangama Sutra is one of the most popular and venerated sutras in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, traditionally regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice leading to enlightenment. The sutra explains how all sentient beings have Buddha-nature hidden within our ordinary experience, and how we can uncover and recognize this true nature. Master Hsuan Hua placed this sutra at the heart of contemplative life and explained this text as a kalyanamitra, a good and wise spiritual friend—a timeless treasure trove for cultivators seeking guidance on the path toward awakening.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions and share comments as we explore how to curtail the outward flow of the senses through focused contemplative practice, examining the sutra’s recommendations for specific methods and how to discern if our practice has gone astray.

91�㽶��Ƶ Extension Class: Buddhism for the Modern Mind

We will explore the sutra’s many relatable yet powerful parables, including the burning house and the illusory city, as well as the famous “Universal Door Chapter” describing the practice of Bodhisattva Guan Yin.

The Lotus Sutra is renowned for its inspiring message that all beings can, and will, become buddhas. This class is offered both online and in person at the Guest Building/Old 91�㽶��Ƶ Building (Conference Room) at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

Kidlit Writing Workshop: Creating Stories for Children & Teens

Writing children’s books is a peculiar art form that can breathe new life into any writing endeavor. It thrives on genius, intuition, daring, and meticulous attention to all components of writing. Picture books can inspire deep thinking and meaningful writing for all levels of life. It’s an excellent way to spread the principles of Buddhism and preserve the stories of your culture.

Led by Jin Rou Shi & Natasha Yim, each session will include craft lessons and workshop activities. There will also be three special guests.

In this class you will learn:
